The Green between Waters is an underwater sculpture that takes the form of phytoplankton, the tiny plant-like organisms that sustain life in the sea. Made with ceramic techniques, it is installed at a depth of about 2.7 meters on the eastern side of Dadaepo Beach. Visitors can enter the water by snorkeling or diving to view the work, while also observing the surrounding marine world.
Swiss-based artist Marie Griesmar explores the physical and symbolic qualities of water. Drawing from marine biology and field research, her work reflects on ocean metabolism, climate change, and the delicate relations among species. Moving between art, science, and activism, she reveals the aesthetic and political values of underwater environments.
Here, Griesmar highlights Dadaepo’s role as an estuary, where phytoplankton from the Nakdong River drift into the sea and form the base of the marine food chain. These microscopic organisms flourish each spring and summer, serving as vital links between river and sea, and as early indicators of environmental change. For this reason, scientists closely study how phytoplankton groups respond to changes in river flow and environment.
Through this immersive setting, the work reminds us that the richness and interdependence of marine life are essential to the balance of life on Earth.
